Journalism Student Looking For Woodlea-Melrose Stories

Hi everyone. I'm a non-traditional journalism student who has lived in the neighborhood since 1993. (I won't tell you which house until afer I've mowed my lawn.) I'm taking a reporting class that requires me to write about 10 stories about my neighborhood. If anyone has any stories they think would make interesting news, please contact me at Email ksarver@asu.edu. Thanks so much!

Howdy Non-traditional!  I assume you are wanting current news.  However, years ago, I researched the history of Woodlea.  I don't know if that would be of interest to you.  But, for example, the following is how our neighborhood began.  "On November 9th, 1928, Sophoria Haeberlin, sold the land that was to be called "Woodlea" to Tom MacKenzie, a bachelor, from Ray, Arizona for $20,000 in "gold coin."  I have a copy of the bill of sale for the land from the County Recorder's office.  In your search for 10 stories, maybe this bit of history (I have much more) might shed light on current stories.  Mark on Mac

Hi Mark. That sounds fascinating!  I don't know how much of the information I could use. But it would be nice to try! Maybe I could use little bits of it here and there throughout some of the stories instead of as one big story. Believe me, I would love to write about the history of our neighborhood, but I don't think my instructor would allow me to. Is the information e-mail-able? Thanks!

I will give you several stories about neighborhoods to write about:

    1. Reverse lanes and how it is creating mass transit in the central Phoenix cooridor

    2. Checks cashed places.  Does this bring down the value of neighborhoods and make people poorer?

    3. Planning and Zoning and Central Phoenix.  Will a mid rise or high rise devalue my house if they can look in my back yard?

    Best of luck.
